WHAT THIS PIECE IS
Seven fish swim single file up a field of marigold gold wool, each one drawn differently by the weaver - one in coral and plum with a lattice of scales, one in slate blue, one in dusty rose stripes, one in deep brick red, one in soft mauve. No two are alike, because no two were meant to be. A deep teal diamond-lattice guard border frames the whole school, and hand-tied ivory fringe finishes both ends.
This is pictorial folk weaving in the Anatolian tradition - the branch of hand-knotting where the weaver tells a story instead of repeating a medallion. Fish have carried meaning in that tradition for centuries: abundance, movement, good fortune entering the home. It is a genuine rarity next to the endless floral and geometric field.

- Woven by master artisans in the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt of Uttar Pradesh, India
- Natural abrash - the gentle tonal drift across the gold ground where dye lots meet, the signature of genuine hand-dyed wool
- Hand-tied fringe, hand-finished selvedges
WHY NEW ZEALAND WOOL MATTERS
New Zealand fleece has a long, fine staple and a naturally high lanolin content. In practice that means a rug that is soft underfoot rather than coarse, that sheds very little after the first few weeks, that resists soiling because lanolin repels liquid before it can set, and that holds colour for decades instead of going flat. Wool is also naturally flame-retardant, hypoallergenic, and a fully renewable fibre.
