"Made for the dining table: an inky navy Oushak field that stays calm under chairs and daily use, ringed by a warm rust border that holds the room together.
HOW IT IS MADE
Weavers in the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt of Uttar Pradesh tie this carpet knot by knot on a cotton foundation over several months. The knot is the Turkish Ghiordes, the symmetrical double knot used in Anatolian and Oushak workshops, which locks each tuft in place and keeps the pile dense under chair legs. Nothing is glued, latexed or machine tufted, and it is a proper pile rug rather than a flatwoven kilim. The fringe is the warp running out of the weave.
THE COLOUR, MEASURED
We colour-sample every piece before we write about it. The field sits at inky navy #14283F, ranging from #0D1C30 in the shadows to #1F374D where the pile catches light. The border is rust #724A31, between #5F3A21 and #875C43. Stone ivory #ABA18F lines both guard bands, and the drawing picks out slate blue, mustard gold and moss green in small doses. Roughly 53% navy, 23% rust and 20% ivory by area: a quiet dark base with a warm edge at every chair.
If you follow 2026 palettes: inky navy and sapphire are back as jewel-tone neutrals, paired with rust and clay rather than grey.
THE DESIGN
The drawing is classic Oushak from West Anatolia, in the Ottoman floral tradition: oversized serrated leaves, curling cloudband hooks and open flowerheads arranged around a small rosette at the centre, with half-forms at each side. A rust main border of rosettes and slanted leaves sits between two ivory guards of tiny flowerheads, finished by a slim navy outer line. At 9x12 it takes a table for six to eight with every chair on the rug.
