Look at the border before you look at the field. Most Oushak borders are vines and rosettes and nothing more. This one is a procession — birds perched on stems, small striding animals, stylized vessels and ewers, and the compact talismanic symbols that Anatolian weavers have carried forward for generations. It reads as ornament from across the room and as narrative from three feet away. That double life is rare in a hand-knotted wool rug, and it is the reason this piece keeps being interesting after the novelty of a new rug wears off.
THE COLOUR STORY
The field is a deep forest-pine green, and it carries visible abrash — the soft tonal banding that happens when wool is dyed in small artisan batches rather than industrially. We name it plainly, because it is the signature of genuine hand-dyeing, not a defect. Framing it is a warm greige-taupe border in the mushroom-neutral family, with the motifs picked out in ochre gold, salmon-apricot, ivory and charcoal, plus quiet flickers of lavender and slate.
That pairing is doing real work. Warm mushroom neutrals have been named the defining interior colour direction of 2026 — earthy, low-saturation, shifting between greige in daylight and taupe at night. WHY NEW ZEALAND WOOL
New Zealand fleece is longer-stapled and higher in natural lanolin than most rug wool. In practice that means very little shedding, real resistance to soiling rather than absorption, colour that holds, and a hand that stays soft instead of going wiry. It is naturally hypoallergenic, flame-resistant and fully biodegradable. Built to be handed down, not replaced.
