"A 9x12 rust Oushak that anchors a whole room — hand-knotted New Zealand wool, warm terracotta field, soft denim-blue border, drawn in the Sultanabad tradition.
ABOUT THIS RUG
Hand-knotted one knot at a time on a cotton foundation using the symmetric Turkish (Ghiordes) knot, this is a genuine artisan carpet from the Bhadohi-Mirzapur weaving belt of Uttar Pradesh, India — the same workshops that supply the trade galleries. No machine, no backing, no glue. The fringe is the warp itself, finished by hand.
THE COLOURWAY (measured, not guessed)
• Field: warm terracotta rust, close to #9A5740 — a fired-clay red that shifts toward orange in daylight and toward deep brick under lamplight
• Main border: a soft, dusty slate blue, close to #6B7176 — a greyed denim tone, not a bright or navy blue
• Motifs: ivory-cream, sage and olive green, deep indigo accents, soft rose and camel
• Fringe and guard stripes: natural ivory against fine charcoal-brown outlines
The field carries a graceful allover vine and palmette design — large-scale scrolling stems, blossom heads and leaf forms drawn in the Oushak and Sultanabad manner, framed by a wide bordered gallery of paisley and floral cartouches. The overall drawing is open and decorator-friendly rather than busy, which is exactly why this style has stayed in favour with designers for over a century.

WHY NEW ZEALAND WOOL
New Zealand fleece is longer-stapled and higher in natural lanolin than commodity wool. In practice that means a brighter, more even take-up of dye, a pile that springs back instead of matting, and a fibre that is naturally soil-resistant thanks to the wool's own lanolin. Wool is also naturally flame-retardant, hypoallergenic, humidity-regulating and fully biodegradable — a genuinely sustainable floor.
