Hand-knotted in the Bhadohi–Mirzapur weaving belt of Uttar Pradesh, India, this piece is built one knot at a time on a cotton foundation using the Turkish Ghiordes symmetrical knot — the dense, hard-wearing technique behind centuries of Anatolian tribal weaving. Nothing here is printed, tufted, or glued.
THE COLOUR — MEASURED, NOT GUESSED
The ground reads as a deep cinnabar red, measured at #892919 (RGB 137/41/25). It sits in the warm brick-to-madder family: saturated enough to anchor a room, earthy enough to live beside oak, walnut, cane and unbleached linen. Secondary tones move from a darker ember (#7A2213) up into a lighter clay-brick (#9A3F29), with motifs picked out in a soft oatmeal ivory (#DDCEC1).
Across the open field you will see gentle tonal movement — light and shadow shifting subtly from one weft band to the next. We measured roughly 7.5 luminance units of band-to-band variation. This is the mild, hand-dyed depth characteristic of small-batch wool dye lots, not a flat printed colour. It is a mark of authenticity, not a defect.
