"WHAT THIS RUG IS
Every piece is hand knotted one knot at a time on a cotton foundation using the Turkish
Ghiordes knot — the symmetrical double knot that gives Oushak weaving its dense, hard-wearing
pile. The pile is 100% New Zealand wool, chosen for its high lanolin content, natural luster
and spring-back underfoot. Woven by master artisans in the Bhadohi-Mirzapur weaving belt of
Uttar Pradesh, India, in the Anatolian Oushak tradition.
THE COLOR, HONESTLY DESCRIBED
The field is a smoked, greyed plum — closer to heather and mauve-taupe than to a bright purple.
It is framed by a wide border in deep garnet oxblood, a softened wine red rather than a scarlet.
Across both, the drawing carries antique gold and ochre palmettes, dusty rose and rosewater
blossoms, oyster ivory outlines, and small accents of indigo, slate blue and moss.
Look closely at the field and you will see gentle horizontal banding — abrash. This is tonal
variation from small-batch dyeing, where each lot of wool takes the dye slightly differently.
It is a mark of authentic hand craft, not a defect, and it is the single clearest signal that
a rug was dyed and knotted by hand rather than machine-printed.
