WHY THIS RUG IS DIFFERENT
Most rugs repeat. This one tells a story. A school of hand-knotted fish swims the length of a deep chocolate-brown wool field — each fish individually drawn, each in its own colorway, no two alike. One wears an ochre head and a chevron-scaled body. Another swims in terracotta with an ivory forked tail. A third is dusty rose and charcoal. They are framed by a fine ivory diamond-lattice border and finished with hand-tied fringe.
This is pictorial folk weaving in the Anatolian tradition — the weaver observes, simplifies, and tells. The ground carries natural abrash, the gentle tonal drift from espresso to warm greige that happens when wool is dyed in small batches rather than industrial vats. It is the mark of a real hand-knotted rug, not a flaw.
Chocolate brown was named the top color for 2026 by a third of surveyed interior designers. This rug arrived there honestly, not by trend-chasing.

New Zealand wool is the quiet differentiator here. Its long, resilient staple and high lanolin content mean the pile springs back under traffic, resists soiling, and stays soft for decades rather than years. Very few sellers in this category specify their wool origin at all.
WHERE IT LIVES
The narrow runner widths were woven with staircases in mind — 2.5 ft is the width that lets a stair rod frame the runner while leaving hardwood visible on either side. Searches for stair runner installation rose over 400% year on year, and a patterned wool runner is the fastest way to turn a plain flight of stairs into the most photographed part of a house.
