"A school of hand-knotted fish swims across a pale sage field in this 8x10 wool rug, plum, mustard and slate blue drawn with folk-art charm and heirloom build.
HOW IT IS MADE
Every knot is tied by hand on a cotton foundation in the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt of India, using the Turkish Ghiordes knot, the symmetrical double knot behind Anatolian and Oushak weaving. No latex, no adhesive backing, no machine tufting. The fringe is the warp itself.
THE COLOUR, MEASURED
We colour-sample every piece before we write about it. The open field is a pale pistachio-sage (#B7B595), moving gently between #AEAD8C and #C0BE9E. Deep aubergine plum (#56393B) carries the biggest fish bodies and fins at about 22% of the surface, with mustard gold (#A17B46), moss green (#7F846B), persimmon (#91553C), shell pink and dusty slate blue across the scales, inside a slim moss-green frame. Light ground against dark fish is why the pattern reads from across a room.
If you follow 2026 palettes: aubergine is one of the saturated tones designers are naming this year, and the Folk Nouveau and playful-pattern rug trends have put storytelling animal motifs back on the floor.
THE DESIGN
A pictorial folk-art design in the tribal and nomadic village tradition, where weavers knotted the animals around them into their rugs, the spirit of Anatolian and Ottoman-era village pieces and flatwoven kilim. Four large fish swim in alternating directions, each body patterned with scales, zig-zags, dots and stripes, with a dozen smaller fish and striped pebbles between them. No medallion, no heavy border, so the field stays airy.
