WHY 9x12 WORKS HERE

9x12 is the dining-room size. A table seating eight needs 24 to 30 inches of rug beyond every edge so chairs stay on wool when guests push back — a 9x12 gives that clearance around a 72 to 84 inch table without crowding the sideboard. In an open-plan great room it does different work: it draws a border around the seating zone and separates it from the walkway, which is how designers stop a large open floor from reading as one undifferentiated space. The dark ground is also the practical choice under a dining table, where a pale rug shows every spill.

CONSTRUCTION — HAND KNOTTED, KNOT BY KNOT

Every rug in this design is hand knotted on a vertical loom in the Bhadohi–Mirzapur weaving belt of Uttar Pradesh, India, using the Turkish Ghiordes knot — the symmetrical double knot that gives Anatolian and Oushak rugs their dense, upright pile and their reputation for outlasting the houses they are bought for. There is no machine in this process and no shortcut. A single 9x12 in this quality represents months of work at the loom by weavers who learned the craft from the previous generation.

The pile is 100% New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation. New Zealand wool matters here for reasons you will feel rather than read: a longer, springier staple that resists crushing under furniture, a natural lanolin content that makes the surface genuinely stain-resistant, and a fineness that keeps the hand soft rather than wiry. It is also low-shedding from the first week, not after a year of vacuuming.

There is no latex backing on this rug. The back is the honest reverse of the front — you can read the knots, and the rug is fully reversible, which means you can rotate and flip it to distribute wear over decades. Latex-backed rugs cannot do this; they crumble, off-gas, and stick to your floor. Wool on cotton, finished with hand-knotted fringe, is the construction collectors and specifiers ask for by name.

COLOR — MIDNIGHT NAVY WITH JEWEL-TONE POLYCHROME

The field is a deep midnight navy that shifts toward ink at the borders and opens to a lighter slate-blue through the centre. That shift is abrash the natural variation that occurs when wool is dyed in separate small batches and the weaver works through them in sequence. It is the single clearest signal of a genuinely hand-made rug, and it is why this navy has depth where a printed or machine-woven navy reads flat.

Scattered across that ground are motifs in petrol teal, antique gold and ochre, moss and olive green, aubergine plum, crimson, and ivory angular stepped rosettes, small cartouches, and serrated star-forms, framed by a wide main border of palmettes and vine scroll and finished with rosette guard stripes.

The timing on this colorway is unusually good. Pinterest's 2026 palette leads with Cool Blue, Jade and Plum Noir all three are in this rug. Etsy named Patina Blue its 2026 Color of the Year. And the dominant interiors story of the year is the return of dark, moody rooms: Farrow & Ball's Hague Blue and Brinjal, Sherwin-Williams' Naval and Night Watch. CARE
Vacuum weekly without a beater bar. Rotate 180 degrees every six months to even out light and traffic. Blot spills immediately with a clean white cloth do not rub. Professional wool cleaning every three to five years. A quality rug pad is strongly recommended: it protects the foundation, adds cushion, and stops slipping.
