Woven on the handlooms of the Bhadohi-Mirzapur belt in Uttar Pradesh, India, this rug is tied knot by knot in the Turkish Ghiordes tradition - the symmetrical Anatolian knot that gives Oushak carpets their density and their long, forgiving wear. Nothing here is glued, printed or machine-pressed. The back tells the truth: a clean, legible mirror of the front, with an ivory fringe that is part of the warp rather than stitched on afterward.
THE PALETTE
The field is a soft ivory, scattered with stylized palmettes, serrated leaf forms and small tribal motifs drawn from Ottoman-era Anatolian design. Around it, a generous cornflower blue border carries moss and olive green foliage, blush and sand accents, and flashes of turquoise. Deep indigo guard borders frame the whole with an ivory hourglass motif borrowed from Kazak weaving. Gentle abrash - the subtle tonal shift natural to hand-dyed wool - moves through the blue as the light changes through the day.
